“Brand magic is so much more than just a logo, tagline or product features, it’s about the story you tell, the values you embody and the experience you offer. It’s how you make people feel.”

In today’s competitive market and with the rise in popularity of brand marketing, businesses are consistently seeking ways to stand out from the crowd. Because let’s face it, they don’t just want to turn up to the party and mingle. They want to be remembered! Not just for what they have to say, but for everything they offer and stand for. It’s the intangible. The connection. It’s how you make people feel! It’s why they choose… to choose you.

Some may say that the true power of a brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room! Or as Scott Cook famously quotes “A brand is no longer what we tell the consumer it is – it is what consumers tell each other it is.”

And one of the most important tools a company can leverage is its ‘brand magic’. The ‘secret sauce’ that ‘cuts through the noise’, creates authenticity and gives a brand it’s edge.

That magic being crucial for recall, creating lasting emotional connections, customer loyalty, and in turn business growth. And who doesn’t want more of that?

So much more than a logo!
In essence, brand magic incorporates all the intangible qualities that make your business memorable. Because it’s so much more than just a logo, tagline, or product features; it’s about the story you tell, the values you embody, and the experience you offer. Because when a business does this well, it taps into something that goes way beyond mere transactions. It creates a sense of belonging and trust, turning your customers into your biggest advocates and cheerleaders!

Finding your brand magic

  • Understand your audience – what they care about and talk their language. Crafting your messaging and tone of voice to speak directly to your customers and their needs.
  • Tell a story that moves people – Forget features – focus on the feelings your brand creates. The best brands make you feel something.
  • Get to the heart of it… Understand your core values, purpose and what you stand for. Ask yourself what drives your business beyond making money. Is it a commitment to sustainability? Is it a passion for innovation or empowering your customers? These values serve as the foundation on which your brand magic is built.
  • Identify your USP’s and what makes you different – and use this as a point of difference in your marketing. Understand your brand archetype (there are 12 in total (ie: Disney being the Magician) but which category do you fall under and how can you leverage that to stand tall in your brand marketing ?)
  • Study the market… How do you differentiate from your competitors and cut through the noise? Be bold, try new things and dare to be different! Be unapologetically you!
  • Find your brand voice and align this consistently across all your marketing, content and social media activity.

Staying ahead

One thing that’s true is that consumers are becoming increasingly more savvy and discerning than they ever have been before, with so much choice, literally available at the click of a button, it’s never been more important to differentiate to allow the right people to find you. Such suitable nuances in your marketing often being the difference between a ‘yes please’ or ‘no thanks!’ Or the reason they choose one brand over another.

Like why does one person pick Nike over Adidas?  iPhone over Samsung? Starbucks over an independent coffee chain? They each have their own points of differentiation that they will play up in their marketing and messaging to influence consumers into making a choice. Sometimes happening so subconsciously we aren’t actually aware of it!  Now there’s the real magic and psychology of brand! (But hey that’s a whole other blog…)

More than just wands and wizardry, as Jonah Sachs wisely put it, your brand’s magic “is a story unfolding across all customer touchpoints.” But that magic isn’t static – it’s a continuous journey with different chapters. One that demands consistent effort, introspection, and a commitment to evolve and innovate as your business grows.
